KLASP

The Knossos Legacy and Sustainable Archaeology Project

About

Our Mission and Vision

KLASP (Knossos Legacy And Sustainable archaeology Project) is a collaborative research project launched in 2022, involving Tulane University (USA) and University College Dublin (Ireland). The project takes place at the Knossos Research Centre in Greece and focuses on studying previously unexplored archaeological finds from the ancient site of Knossos on Crete.

Knossos has been excavated for over a century, and much of its material remains unpublished. Our goal is to uncover and share these findings, while also training students in essential archaeological skills, particularly in pottery analysis. Students, selected through a competitive process, work closely with experts to learn how pottery can reveal key information about past societies. This hands-on training fosters collaborative learning in a friendly, supportive environment.

KLASP consists of three sub-projects, each exploring different areas of Knossos from various time periods:

  • North Front Soundings, 1987 (Joanna Day)

  • North West Palace (Emilia Oddo)

  • Production Landscape of Historical Knossos (Conor Trainor)

These projects span from the Early Bronze Age to the Imperial Roman period, shedding light on Knossos’ rich and diverse history.
